Extract from BBC Article:

Corruption
Yale University economics professor Dean Karlan, an expert on charitable giving, says: "Corruption concerns may explain why giving is lower to developing countries than many would like it to be, but it does not explain why there is less money pouring into Pakistan now than does to disaster relief causes in other developing countries with similar governance issues."
Dr Marie Lall says: "People in Pakistan are sceptical the government will be transparent. But they are giving to philanthropic organisations. In the UK, I think people are sceptical of [non-governmental organisations'] overheads and costs. They don't know which ones are transparent and reliable, even though local organisations such as TCF [The Citizens' Foundation] are doing an incredible job."

Date: September 19,2010
Time: 5 - 7:30pm,
Address: Eldorado Ballroom (Project Row Houses Campus)
2310 Elgin, Houston, TX 77004

$ Pay what you can; 100% of proceeds go towards Pakistani flood relief efforts

All through the month of August, Pakistans River Indus experienced heavy flooding causing more than 1,500 deaths and the displacement of nearly 20 million people along the 800 mile-long riverbank. Even once the water recedes, people in Pakistan will continue to struggle to deal with the heavy loss of lives, agriculture, infrastructure, and growing illnesses. To provide some relief to the community, VBB will collaborate with organizations around Houston to raise funds towards flood relief efforts in Pakistan. The fundraiser evening, aimed at raising awareness about the situation in Pakistan, will feature musical and informative videos directly from Pakistan, including audio/video appearances by LAAL, a Pakistani band who just released a new song in honor of those affected by the floods, and audio recordings by Pakistani novelists Mohammed Hanif and Sorayya Khan. Journalists and artists from India, including Satyen K. Bordoloi and Sandeep Patey, will also be sending footage. DJ A/V will be spinning the discs and videos, and the Pakistani Consul General will be available to answer questions. As always, VBB will serve food, drinks and there will be an opportunity to mix, mingle and gain more information about the situation in Pakistan. All funds from the evening will go toward Pakistani non-profits, Karachi Relief Trust, Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation and the Pakistan Medical Association. Please join us! (If you cannot attend, but would like to still donate, please send a check to VBB and clearly mark "For Flood Relief").

This event is co-sponsored by FotoFest, Geo TV, Houston Institute for Culture, Houston Peace and Justice Center, MECA and Pacifica Radio KPFT 90.1 FM. Special thanks to Project Row Houses for the use of the Eldorado Ballroom.

Stay tuned for information on our upcoming season, VBB's Second Decade: 2010-11
